Archaeological illustration

Archaeological illustration is a valuable tool that archaeologists enable to not only document, and display archaeological discoveries, but also to analyze the remains to reconstruct cultures from the past. Archaeological illustration comprises on site field drawing (architecture, stratigraphy, traces), documentation of the finds, and reconstruction – on paper and digital. The purpose of archaeological illustration is to record every stage in the excavation, so that the archaeologist can process, study and assess the archaeological data at the lab.

Working as a professional illustrator since 2005, I have become specialized in field recording (architecture, stratigraphy, other remains and traces, such as mosaics) on paper and its digitization. Ιillustration and reconstruction of any kind of archaeological material category, such as pottery, glass, stone objects, (osteo-)organic remains, metal, and seals. In addition, I make reconstructions of fragmented objects and scenes from the past, for educational programs and professional publications.

I have been collaborating with archaeologists, schools of archaeology, and for several years I was illustrator for the 32nd Ephorate of Classical and Prehistoric Archaeology of Igoumenitsa. Next to that, I was part of a team responsible for the creation of the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Igoumenitsa. In here, I was in charge of the visual presentation of the museum. Another project concerned the illustration of material derived from several sites in and around Karystos. In Santorini I have drawn material for archaeologists in the Prehistoric Museum of Thera and material from the excavation of Akrotiri. In Athens I drew material for archeological projects in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and the Archaeological Museum of Kifissia.
